Description

If you like spinach then you’ll love this! Not only is it delicious but is classed as a superfood, containing Vitamins A, C and K.It is the parent of familiar annuals such as beetroot, chard and perpetual spinach. It can be found growing wild on the coasts of Europe and western Asia.

This plant often remains green all year round.

Position

It likes a sunny place to grow

Soil

It appreciates well-drained soil and doesn't like being waterlogged in winter.

Planting

It can reach a height of 50-60cms (but gets taller with flower heads). Plant 30cms apart.

Harvesting period

It can be harvested from April to October (although the best time is May when the young leaves are at their most tender). The plant flowers between July and September.

Edible part of the plant

Cook as you would spinach or chard. In addition the flowers can be used in salads.
