Description

A typical portuguese Kale, very popular in many tradicional portuguese dishes, like the well known “caldo verde”. The plant is a biennial where winter frost occurs, and perennial in even colder regions. It is also moderately sensitive to salinity. It has an upright stalk and can grow up to 3 meters ( 9 feet) hight.

This plant remains green all year round. Can be picked at any time when it has at least 8 big leaves.

Position

Full sun or light shade.

Soil

Well drained and fertile soil. Neutral Ph soil is best.

Planting

It has an upright stalk and can grow up to 3 meters ( 9 feet) hight. Can also grow in containers.
Can be planted year-round, but it grows best when planted in fall or spring.

Harvesting period

Can start harvesting the bigger outer leaves when the plant has 6 to 8 big leaves.
It grows best when is colder – winter and early spring.

Edible part of the plant

Can eat the leaves (cooked or raw). Cook as you would any other kale.
