Description

These plants can be found growing naturally in coastal areas in the south of the UK. They produce shiny green leaves and yellow/green flowers which are attractive to pollinators. They can grow up to 1m in height and spread outwards so plant seedlings 50cms apart.

Season

The plant is ready for initial harvesting in the autumn and the leaves continue throughout the winter.

Position

Plant ideally in a sunny location with well-drained soil but it can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade.

Soil

It will tolerate light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. It grows well in mildly acid, neutral and basic (mildly alkaline) soils.

Planting

Plant seedlings 50cms apart.

Harvesting period

Harvest the tender stems (similar to celery in taste) by cutting them just above soil level and before the flowers open.

Edible part of the plant

The stem can be eaten raw or cooked and the flower buds can be added raw to salads. The seeds are quite spicy and can be used as a pepper substitute. The roots can be boiled and used in soups or stews.
