Description

This is one of the most important onions grown in China and Japan and weirdly there is no connection to Wales!

Plant in sun or light shade, preferably in well-drained soil.

Though drought-tolerant this plant benefits from regular watering during dry periods.

Harvest from the plant in its second year: the bulbs and leaves can be used in cooked dishes, salads and as a garnish.

Season

Welsh onions grow in clumps and stay green over the winter. They produce purple flowers in the summer.

Position

Plant in sun or light shade.

Soil

Plant preferably in well-drained soil. Though drought-tolerant this plant benefits from regular watering during dry periods.

Planting

Plant in rows 25cms apart. They can grow to between 0.5m and 1m over a 5-year period.

Harvesting period

Harvest from the plant in its second year from June to September when the onions are as thick as a pencil.

Edible part of the plant

The green leaves can be used in cooked dishes, salads and as a garnish. If you choose to eat the bulbs too then the plant can be considered an annual!
