Description

A dark green, slightly bitter salad leaf. It can grow to 1-1.5m in height with a spread of 0.5-1m so allow plenty of space for plants to grow. This plant prefers full sun but is also happy in light shade. Plant in well-drained, fertile soil. The leaves can be used in salads and can be harvested throughout the growing season until October. Once flowers form the leaves can become more bitter.

Season

Leaves are produced from spring through to the autumn. The flowers (commonly blue but can also be white or pink) appear in summer. They open in sunshine and close in wet weather.

Position

This plant prefers full sun but is also happy in light shade.

Soil

Plant in well-drained, fertile soil.

Planting

Plant 50cms apart as they can spread anything up to a meter when fully grown.

Harvesting period

They can be harvested throughout the growing season until October. Once flowers form the leaves can become more bitter.

Edible part of the plant

The leaves can be used in salads. The roots can be roasted and ground then made into a caffeine-free coffee substitute.
