This is a seashore plant which likes a well-drained location in sun or partial shade.

The leaves of this plant are succulent and tasty when added to salads.

They can be harvested in summer and autumn and plants will withstand cold temperatures though would benefit from fleece protection in the winter.

However they will often self-seed the following year if there’s bare soil around them.

Season

Buck's Horn Plantain is an evergreen and produces flowers from June to September. Cut off the seed heads that come after if you don't want it spreading everywhere!

They are happy if planted in sun or partial shade.

Soil

This plant does well in sandy or stony, dry soil so can be a good addition to problem sites in your garden.

Planting

Should be planted 25cm apart. They like a well-drained location. Plants will withstand cold temperatures though would benefit from fleece protection in the winter.

The leaves of this plant are succulent and tasty when added to salads. They can be harvested in summer and autumn.

Edible part of the plant

Use the young leaves in salads and cook the older ones as you would spinach.
